Fossil fuels are extracted from dead and organic materials(plants and animals) buried millions of years ago. When these materials turn into sedimentary rocks after being exposed to pressure and heat in the earth’s crust fossil fuels are created.Pros and Cons of Fossil Fuel

They include natural gas, coal and petroleum products. Fossil fuel has been used as a source of energy for centuries.

Fossil fuels have been used for many purposes such as cooking, heating, lighting, and more. In today’s world, they are used to fulfill electricity and energy demands which help in the operation of large factories and industries.

Fossil fuel has provided the progressive and advance growth of the technology and equipment that are in use currently.

Fossil fuels are preferred over other alternative sources of energy. It is naturally generated by the fossilization process and takes millions of years to be prepared.

Fossil fuels are limited underneath, if all the fossil fuels are extracted then it cannot be generated and will take millions of years to be ready for use. Here we are going to discuss the pros and cons of fossil fuels.

Pros of Fossil Fuel

Fossil fuel has been used for many purposes using industrial equipment which makes products from a tiny needle to the big airplanes and its parts.

The cylinder gas used in the home, to the tap we use in the garden has been possible due to the availability of fossil fuels. More than 85% of the energy used is produced from fossil fuels which proved its efficiency and importance. Here are some of the pros of fossil fuel listed below.

1. Availability

Fossil fuel has been the source of electricity and heat for many years. Many countries around the world are rich in oil, coal and natural gas which are fossil fuels.

These resources have been collected by the people using the equipment designed and made for the extraction of fossil fuels. It is considered the main energy source on the planet as they are widely available.

2. Efficient

Fossil fuel is considered the most efficient source of energy. The small amount of fuel generates the massive energy which can operate the big machines. As oil is denser 6.4 billion times than wind, solar, and water energy, generating a massive amount of energy.

The reason for it to be efficient among all sources is, where oil produces 45 billion energy joules per cubic meter, wind produces only seven energy joules per cubic meter at ten mph. This pros of fossil fuels shows why it is the most preferred energy source.

3. Byproducts

The oil is separated into several groups after the extraction from earth and is used for different purposes. The most important byproduct of fossil fuel is plastics. The usefulness of plastic is not to be mentioned in our daily life routine.

The other products made from fossil fuels are shoes, clothing, toothpaste, soap, etc. These byproducts are the reason for the dependency on fossil fuels as they produce daily use materials.

3. Portability

The risk of fossil fuel to ignite during transportation is very low. The transportation of fossil fuel is considered to be a safe and easy compared to the sun, wind, and water.

Fossil fuel has been transported to every corner of the world via road, water, and air. It can be transported a thousand miles in the container. This shows the feasibility of fossil fuel where it can be easily stored and transported.

4. Low Infrastructure

The power plant which runs on fossil fuel is extremely easy to set up and maintain. Whereas the renewable energy source requires a large area and many types of equipment, on the other hand, fossil fuels require a small space to generate a huge amount of energy.

Since it has been in use for a long time, there is infrastructure in place to keep these things moving to continue the supply for the plant. The power station that runs on natural gas generates 5 GW of energy in an area of only 1 square kilometer but the wind farm occupying an area of about 50 square kilometers generates 8 GW of energy.

5. Cost Effective

The infrastructure needed for extraction and transportation of fossil fuel’s cost is relatively low compared to other alternative energy sources. The cost-effectiveness of fossil fuel is also determined by its availability throughout the world.

The low maintenance and set up procedure makes it less expensive and affordable. This is the reason why fossil fuel is used as the main source of energy all around the world.

6. Affects the Economy

Life without fossil fuels cannot be imagined. The petroleum, plastics, wardrobes, etc all these things are the possible cause of fossil fuels. The transportation of goods and services from one place to another via air, via road, via ship all these modes, are viable due to the utilization of fossil fuels.

The production of fossil fuel contributes to the national economy and helps to generate revenues for the local community. The use of fossil fuels have made their life faster and easier. The contribution of fossil fuel in the welfare and economy of people is undeniable.

7. Employment

There are many people employed in the fossil fuel sector. Every year this sector generates thousands of jobs around the world. The opportunity for the job provides the possibility of improving the economic status of an individual. The revenue collected helps to boost the economy and welfare of the nation.

Cons of Fossil Fuels

Global warming is an issue that is affecting millions of lives around the world. Fossil fuels are one of the major components responsible. It includes environmental as well as health hazards due to gas released in the atmosphere during combustion.

The level of pollution is increasing every year and deforestation has lead to problems like a tsunami and natural calamities. Some of the cons of fossil fuel are listed below.

1. Environmental Damage

The major components of global warming are greenhouse gases emitted by fossil fuels polluting the environment.

The rapid climate change affects millions of lives every year, resulting in the melting of ice, increasing sea levels and the destruction of natural habitat. When the pollutants get mixed with air and water the damage done to the environment has to be addressed seriously.

2. Hampers Human health

After the pollution of the environment, the one that will be suffering are humans. The water and air pollution leads to various diseases affecting the health of human. Air pollution might cause asthma and on the other hand, water pollution can cause serious illnesses.

The air pollution causes death of 5.9 million infants every year and expenditure of $85 billion on human health is a total loss that adversely affects the economy of the nation. The effect on human health can be added to the cons of fossil fuels.

3. Need a Massive Amount of Coal

The production of energy from fossil fuels requires a huge amount of coal. Tons of coals have to be transported to the power station, sometimes have to travel a thousand miles if not available nearby.

This operation demands lots of manpower and is very expensive to handle. These are the reason for the hike in fuel price and shortage of fuel which leads to an economic crisis.

4. Limited Source

Fossil fuels are not a renewable source of energy like sunlight, water or wind energy. The fossil fuel for generation is the ones that are available right now in the earth’s crust. It will take a hundred million years to get the next supply of fossil fuels.

It means once all the fossil fuels are used nothing is left to work with or can be generated with. It will affect every aspect of individuals life around the world. The finite energy source of fossil fuel also can be included in the disadvantage of fossil fuel cause of its uncertainty.

5. Oil spilling During Transportation

The major disadvantage of transporting fossil fuels is the threat to harm nature. If the oil spills in the land and water, it will harm the organisms living in the environment. When the container leaks the oil in the sea or the ship is drowned the toxic substances released will pose a threat to the marine’s life.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico included 4.9 million barrels which caused the death of millions of animals, birds, and plants affecting the ecosystem in the area.

6. Hike in Price

The dependency on fossil fuels has made it more expensive. The large portion of the production of fossil fuel is handled by certain countries. The lower output, economic crisis, worldwide price fluctuation are the major issues in the current world.

The complicated process, as well as the monopoly of the powerhouse countries, determine its market. The price of the fuels are not standard or stable and has the chance of a hike in price each year.

7. Harmful Environment For Workers

The dust generated by drilling and gases in the mine can be harmful to the worker as well as the serious accidents are a threat in the extraction area taking the life of an individual.

The workers suffer from many diseases like skin cancer, asthma, etc due to inhalation of toxic substances. Life of hundreds is being compromised every year while coal mining and oil drilling.
